This is really a romantic tale – in the original, 19th century sense of word. A real sadistic ballad – yet the characters seem real and not THAT twisted as it might seem. The characters (especially Lara) evolve towards the climax of the story. The finale IS contrived but it matches the ballad format perfectly. This is also one of rare tales featuring a multifaceted dominant.
The scat motive is a recurring signal, paralleling the characters’ mental state.
This is extreme humiliation SM and might not be for everyone, but WOW – it’s one of the kinds.
Beautifully written too.
Btw – Gemma is the only possible victim in this story. Except .. perhaps Lara is the real vicitim? Good twist to “Lara’s song’.

- Pej, thanks for your review and generous rating. I knew you of all readers would 'get it'. Yes it's a C19 'romance' and I tried to make it a C16 'tragedy' too. A ballad should be sentimental and the start, middle and (especially) end try to stick with a tragic inevitability, albeit with my pen running away with the characters at times. And, yes, Lara probably is the real victim, but maybe that's just us falling for what she would have us believe. Good to hear from you. Velvetglove

Good story. Hot sex and torture. Didn't like that Gemma was responding to Lara. She should have left her the second she was free. Or even better, betrayed her and enslaved her (and then payed her back with interest). I still liked the ending but it would have been better if Lara got killed (or enslaved). Or at least if Michelle and family had escaped.
The story is missing a scifi code (and maybe torture and toys). And I think the romantic story code is totally misplaced. (8/10)

- azrig17, thanks for your review. To take your coding views first, I think you make a fair comment that the 'romantic' story code might be misplaced. But in combination with the 'nc' code it gives the reader a warning that it's not going to be your usual love story. There is to my mind (and there was to readers of After the Pestilence, of which this is a spin-off) a sort-of-romantic game going on between the main protagonists, certainly in terms of Lara's lust for Gemma. Not sure about a 'scifi' code. The story is set in the near future (after a global pestilence) but there's not much science fiction going on. I associate 'torture' with blood and gore but I accept I may be wrong.
As for the end, Gemma was not "responding to Lara" in any way other than a desire to survive and gain her (eventual) freedom. I'm afraid in the future world where the story's set, betrayal and payback are not an option ! Yes, the knife might have got Lara not Gemma but that's the way things sometimes are - as Lara would say, shit happens ! I looked up your review history and 8 seems a decent score from you so thanks.
