Another outstanding story by this author in an astonishingly consistent string of high-quality stories posted to this site. Among a number of other stories by this author located in various African countries (this author's stories cover many countries and continents in various historical periods with remarkable cultural knowledge of each), this one is 1960s in the Congo, where a Belgian nun (and later also a priest) is raped, tortured, sexually and psychologically tormented. Although I am not a nun, and neither is the author I presume, the nun's thoughts and feelings as she is aroused against her will and, in her view, severely tested by God (and failing) seem uncannily authentic. It is amazing how, whether male or female, younger or older, from whatever country, culture and historical period, this author seems to seamlessly occupy, portray and convey it to us as readers, and, in the process penetrate and occupy us (me). I have no idea who or what this author really is, but, if I may say so in a way that plays on a common theme in his stories... as an African American professor with some knowledge of what the author addresses in and incorporates into his stories (socially, culturally, emotionally, sexually), with each story in a parallel yet uniquely distinctive way, this author and his/her stories COLONIZES MY SOUL. Incredible (and kind of creepy, to be honest). I keep re-discovering, story by story, how his characters' vulnerabilities are very much my own (and, by projection, those of professional colleagues, friends and family members of mine, as well as the author portrays those characters also). I actually do not know any nuns personally, and no one particularly like Sister Suzanne. Yet I recognize her and what happens to and within her as well as I recognize myself in her and in this story and in and through the author's words. Wow. (10/10)
