One thing Angie succeeded in is making me want to have a look at her other stories. Because, to be frank (while I'm Jimmy, in reality), the couple of stories from la Fuchs I have read so far, didn't exactly inspire me to go through the lot. "Training Rose" on the other hand, is of a total different caliber than what I remember of Angie's former writings. This story is robust as an Arab stallion, pardon the analogy. Furthermore, and to Angie's credit, the entire story rests almost completely on dialogue. And boy -or girl- the conversations are a treat. First of all, they come across as totally natural, but they also lend the story an aura of lightness, like two girls skipping hand in hand down the street. This lightness, or frivolity, might clash with the content of the story --which is of the more sinister kind-- but it doesn't. On the contrary, it helps set the stage. Because, after all, the folks populating this tale are at home in the little world Angie created, so, why should they sound distressed? So far, so good, I would say. I just did, actually. I'll conclude where I started, with the promise I must look into Angie.Fuchs' so far disregarded other stories. maybe even the ones I did read and review. Because, either I missed something, or Angie has seriously ameliorated recently. Or maybe, she just now has found her schwung and has become more comfortable with what she writes... Whatever the case, "Training Rose" is top material. I'll read you around, Angie.Fuchs... and well done! JJ (10/10)
